Inspiration: JULIA POTT

I discovered Julia Pott about a couple months ago. I bookmarked her blog in a rush and said I was going to come back to it, then guess what? I lost my bookmarks for that day and spent the last couple months trying to remember the name I only knew for 5 seconds, but I found it! I just have to say Ms.Pott is quite unique in her drawings and ideas and it is inspiring. What's even more is that she does animation also. In my opinion, her animination is my living, breathing childhood. I remember seeing a few cartoons or books with illustrations when I was a kid and there is something about her work especially the short stories that resonate with me. When I watch her short films I feel...I feel..(you can tell I'm writing with my emotion) a nostalgic calm. And even though her stories are more teen/adult level about love and relationships it still feels like I can re-live my childhood through them; even if its only for 5 minutes. I don't think I could look at any other animation on television or else where that would make these feelings come alive like it does in her stories.

Julia recently done a commercial for Toyota and it was so refreshing and much more interesting then any commercial Toyota has ever done. She has also done work for Bat For Lashes (one of my favoriteeeee singerrrrs whoooo hooo!) and also has her works on totes, ipod/laptop skins and various other mediums. You can find her various work on her blog or even her youtube channel of all her public animations I will assure you this is someone you want to look for on her rise to the top!

By the way Julia, if you ever get your own animation show I will be glued to my TV screen or computer screen or whatever screen you are on!

Black Friday + Urban Outfitters

I'll admit.. I'm a little selfish..found out this week that my favorite store,Urban Outfitters will have their whole store 50% off  and that's IN-STORE only... I'm back in Louisiana for a little while and even though for every five streets in New York there is an Urban Outfitters; there is only two in the whole STATE(yea just let the shock roll over you)... so now I just sit here (not in New Orleans but a smaller town) bitching and moaning while surf the clothing porn that is UrbanOutfitters.com...So tomorrow morning, get out your bed at 4 am, crowd the subway or roads and fight for that Cambridge bag that will be only $75 instead of $150 or that $80 Silence and Noise dress that will only be $40...ugh enjoy...

Style Icon: Miroslava Duma

Miroslava Duma was an editor for Harper's Bazaar (Russia) and now is a freelance writer for numerous publications such as OK Magazinee (Russia), Tatler, Glamour (Russia). She is only 25 and recently had a baby in October...I've been following her style(almost stalking) for about a year now... Quite an inspiration... Can't wait to see what she sports with her new baby ---I'm sure he/she will be stylish!

When The Rainbow Wasn't Enough

Dark phrases of womanhood
of never having been a girl
half-notes scattered
without rhythm/ no tune
distraught laughter falling
over a black girl's shoulder
it's funny/ it's hysterical
the melody-less-ness of her dance
don't tell nobody don't tell a soul
she's dancing on beer cans & shingles

This must be the spook house
another song with no singers
lyrics/no voices
and interrupted solos
unseen performances

Are we ghouls?
children of horror?
the joke?

Don't tell nobody don't tell a soul
Are we animals? Have we gone crazy?

I can't hear anything
but maddening screams
and the soft strains of death
and you promised me
you promised me...
sing a black girl's song
bring her out
to know herself
to know you
but sing her rhythms
caring/struggle/hard times

Sing her song of life
she's been dead so long
closed in silence so long
she doesn't know the sound
of her own voice
her infinite beauty
she's half-notes scattered
without rhythm/no tune
sing her sighs
sing the song of her possibilities
sing a righteous gospel
the making of a melody
let her be born
let her be born
and handled warmly.

I won't lie, I won't remember magazine shoots that often even if I like them. In the past ,if someone asks me "Whats your favorite photographer/shoot?" I wouldn't even have an answer.. but that changed in 2009 when I saw Interview Magazine 40th Anniversary cover shoot for Oct/Nov 2009 ...Something about the mixture of beauty and grunge is unbelievable hot and creates great intensity.. It could never be more perfect from the editing,to the photography by Craig Mcdean,to the art direction, makeup artistry and finally the wardrobe styling...It may be my favorite...forever...
